Do We Even Understand God?

I was wondering what I should blog about today, but after reading Pete Wilson’s post (God Bless America?) and watching the video he linked to, there is nothing more I need to say. I encourage you to go read the post and watch the video of a young boy who’s family had to give up their custody to the government because they could no longer afford to keep him. Pete’s post reminded me of a message that I heard in 2005 at the PDYM Conference by Louie Giglio called “Prayer-a-Remix” You can download the entire message for Free HERE

Warning: After listening to this message your prayer life will be totally messed up, so do not listen to it if you are comfortable praying the average cliche’ Americanized Chritian prayers and living the typical self-serving Americanized Christian life…I warned you!

Here is an excerpt from Pete, be sure to go check out the rest of his post HERE and watch the video:

I saw this bumper sticker the other day when I was walking into Blockbuster. It says, “My Pastor Says God Bless America.” Since seeing the bumper sticker I’ve discovered it’s linked to a political movement.

I want to be clear that I’m neither condemning nor endorsing this organization. I know nothing about it, but this bumper sticker just prompted the following thoughts.

I’m tired of praying “God Bless America.” Now, before you try to stone me at the county courthouse, let me clearly state, “I’m proud of our country.” I’m indebted to people who have served her to give me the freedoms I have. So we’re cool. I shoot fireworks off on the 4th and everything.

Horrible Accident

When I saw this image on the front page of foxnews.com today, my jaw just dropped in shock. All we can do is pray for those who are injured and for the family of the one who has died, here is the story…

A car driven by an alleged drunken driver plowed into a bicycle race along a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border Sunday, killing one cyclist and injuring 10 others. More

Signs, Signs, Everywhere a Sign

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — It seemed like an almost literal answer to their prayers. When two New Zealand pilots ran out of fuel in a microlight airplane they offered prayers and were able to make an emergency landing in a field — coming to rest right next to a sign reading, “Jesus is Lord.” [Read Entire Article]

Contentment

Bread SliceWe all do it! We read the Bible, sometimes so fast that when we are finished, we couldn’t tell someone what we just read. Growing up in a pastor’s home, in church, and in Christian school, I did a lot of that. It was never personal. I don’t really remember being taught to study the Bible for personal spiritual growth or to understand my God more, I only remember being taught to read it because it was the right thing to do…well that didn’t help me at all…nor did it help the 90% of my “Christian” School classmates that are either sitting in a chair in some church somewhere not using their gifts and talents for Christ, or they are off the Christian journey all together.

All of that to say, I was reading through Proverbs 30 yesterday and ran across this prayer from Agur. I have read Proverbs 30 before, but I never paid much attention to what it was saying: The entire prayer is great, but two areas stuck out to me, one I will blog about later after I have time to think about it, but here is the quote from verse 8b-9

“..Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs. For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God’s holy name.”

Talk about Contentment! “Give me just enough to satisfy my needs.” This is a hard prayer to pray. Especially when it is so much easier to pray “God give me more!” “God bless me more!” Agur was content to have his needs met. When I read this, I said ‘Wow!’ because it jumped out at me, but I have to be honest, this is hard to grasp. At first I didn’t even highlight the verse because I didn’t want to be responsible to live it. It may just be because I live in America and the one with the most money and the biggest toys win. Honestly, God has provided for all of my needs, but I wonder if I lived in a third world country where poverty is the daily expectancy, would I be content with ‘just enough?‘ Ouch, this one is tough…

Humble Me!

Dear God,

Please humble me! Please make me lower…make me decrease so you can increase. May your influence through my life lead people to you and not divide people and turn them away. May I never preach messages like these. May I never speak out against your anointing, your men, your people, your creation, your church. God I want you to use me, but not at the expense of hurting another man of God or his ministry. Thank you Lord that churches all across America are exploding for you because they refuse to allow man to hold them back, instead they are being obedient to you and your word. My God! If you would be so generous to allow my life to count for as much as you have the lives of men like Perry Noble and Billy Graham. Lord, I know you love men like Pastor Steven Anderson, and I pray that you would change his heart, and that though he may have his own opinions, that you would humble him, change his heart, use him greatly for your ministry, and give him a deep love for your people and your pastors. Forgive him for his venomous attacks towards your men. Lord only you can change his heart and his mind. Lord may I never represent you in an ill fashion.
