Watch Out for the Devour

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your Christian brothers and sisters all over the world are going through the same kind of suffering you are. 1 Peter 5:8-9 [Full Context]

I admit, I’ve been on a personal journey to confirm that what I was taught at a younger age is correct and to affirm what I believe Scripture teaches for myself, so I still have ‘Aha!’ moments…a lot! I had a pastor who used to push down people’s throats that the “man of God deserved double honor,” so we were never allowed to question him. Later in life I learned that this statement was pulled out of context. 1 Timothy 5:17 says that an elder who directs the affairs of the church WELL deserves double honor in his compensation, especially those who preach and teach…key word…well, this has nothing to do with questioning an Elder when they have fallen off the reservation!

Anyway, all of that to say, my eyes were opened tonight at 1 Peter 5:8-9. I find it interesting that it is written to “Elders” and “Young Men.” The warning is to “Stay Alert!” that our enemy, the devil, prowls around seeking who he may devour. Sure, this is applicable to all Christians, but it is specifically written to Elders and young men. A friend contacted me this week. She found out that her former pastor has been involved in a sexual affair. I was heartbroken for that man, his family, the church, their people and their leaders. It seems to be coming to the surface more and more. What greater victory could we as pastors and church leaders give Satan than to dishonor God in our calling? To abuse our office? To open ourselves up to devour?

Notice, the verse says, seeking who he may devour…I went through a marriage course by Bruce Wilkerson with my wife. He used the analogy of a traffic light. We all give off a signal. Red light, I’m not available. Green light, I’m looking…I’m open & available! Satan is prowling to see if your light is lit up green, and if it is, you’re open to attack! Pastor, Elder, young man…if you are married, you better be putting off the right signals. It goes beyond sexually too. It’s applicable to any moral and ethical standard that the Bible calls us to.

Pastors are highly competitive people. I wonder what would happen if we stopped looking at each others’ ministries to see what one another is doing and how many we are running, and started devoting ourselves to prayer for one another?

…Stay Alert!

Ridiculous

This has got to be one of the most ridiculous campaigns or ideas that I have ever seen, Rock the Vote is asking their mindless loyal followers to withhold sex from anyone who disagrees with the health care reform bill:

I don’t care where you land on the health care debate; this video is pushing an idea that is unethical, immature, and shallow. Seriously, I think its only rhetorical to ask the question “What’s wrong with our society?” anymore. I pity the person who’s convictions, opinions, and thoughts can be persuaded by a temporary moment of pleasure. What’s the difference in selling your body for a dollar and selling it for a vote? It would be NO different if this was coming from a group who opposed the reform, just as it is ridiculous coming from Rock the Vote. Because of a busy week I don’t have time to dive into all of the problems surrounding this video, but you are more than welcome to share your thoughts and opinions. To think, these same people would consider Christians ridiculous for telling people to wait for marriage to have sex. Yeah, I don’t think they listen to themselves very often.

Yeah Jordin Sparks!!!

Saw this article on Fox News last night:

LOS ANGELES —  Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Award host Russell Brand took several digs at young stars wearing “purity rings” to pledge their virginity until marriage — and “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks wasn’t having any of it.

Brand’s running theme for the evening centered on the Jonas Brothers and their rings — until Sparks stepped on stage to have her say about his constant remarks.

“Not everyone wants to be a slut,” Sparks spat back, the auditorium filling with applause. Sparks, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez are also among the young stars who have vowed to remain chaste.

Sparks told Pop Tarts later at the In Touch magazine after-party that she was more than happy to put Brand — known as Britain’s ultimate playboy — in his place.

“Somebody had to do it,” she said.

Word is, Russell Brand, not only was highly sexual in his jokes and conversations at the VMA’s, but he decided to give his opinion on our political situation here in America as well. It is obvious that as he decided to attack the Jonas Brothers and Sarah Palin’s soon to be son-in-law, the crows quickly lost interest. Russell had huge applause when he gave his endorsement of Obama courtesy of the UK, but became very unpopular, almost to dead silence with his vial attacks. Check the video out below for yourself.

UPDATE #2: Here is the video response for Jordin Sparks (CLICK HERE)…they cut it short & cut the applause out. Thanks Chuck for requesting the video…I apologize for my lazy blogging 🙂

While your at it, Join the Conversation, Did you watch the VMA’s? If not, watch the video, and then tell me what you think. I think its exciting to see some mainstream, popular artist stand up for purity!

Blog Pirates

A Blog Pirate: Someone who tries to steal the spotlight from a more successful blog in order to make their blog noticed and to increase their traffic stats.

This is usually done by pointlessly criticizing posts in order to drive traffic to their blog. Most blog pirates surf the “What’s Hot” on the front page of blog hosts (I.E. WordPress.com) hunting their next victim. They also search through the tags pages to see what blogs have the most comments (thus a high level of traffic) and rips into the author of the blog and/or their content. If you have ever crossed a Blog Pirate you will see why they have to steal the spotlight, its usually because their content is not good enough to draw their own crowd and keep them.

Blog Pirates know that most authors will defend their content thus linking to the pirate and driving their readers (traffic) to the pirate’s site, they also know that when people search for key words pertaining to the victim’s blog in Google the searcher will be driven to the pirate’s blog as well, thus attracting extra traffic. Blog Pirates are interested in one thing, signing on to WordPress and immediately going to their daily stats and seeing how many hits they had that day…nothing more, nothing less.

Watch it! You may be hijacked by a Blog Pirate today 🙂
