Young Voters, Please Stop Playing!

I believe that everyone who has the priviledge to vote should. It is one of the greatest responsibilities we have in this country. This article is not a Pro-McCain or a Pro-Obama article, its purpose is not to sway voters to one camp or the other, however I do want to point some foolishness out that is driving me crazy and it has great potential to cause harm to the future of our country for our kids.

It just happens that the biggest group of culprits have outwardly and publically supported Barak Obama. A majority of young voters that I have heard from take our priviledge of voting as a joke, yet they are voting between two candidates who will have a huge opportunity to make policies and to elect judges that will be in place for the next 30+ years. Some of the laws and policies that are put into place may not have an immediate effect on those who are voting in this election cycle, but my kids will definitely benefit from them or suffer because of them in the years to come. When I step into the voting booth I no longer have just myself to think about, but now I have 3 children and a future of grandchildren that will be directly effected by the two candidates that we are voting for in 2008.

So young voter, I urge you, before you vote, please do your homework and take this responsibility serious. Over the last several months and during the primaries I have grown more and more aggravated with what I am hearing, here are a few quotes from young voters:

“I am voting for Barak Obama because he is hot.”
“We are voting for John Edwards because we like his hair.”
“I am voting for Barak Obama because that’s who my parents said they are voting for.”
“Did you hear Barak Obama’s speach? I am voting for him.”

All of these sound like great leadership principles that will benefit our country. Within those thoughts lies the answer, I reckon, to balance the budget so my kids do not have to pay back China for our generation’s debts. I can clearly hear the answer to lowering energy cost in those quotes. Within each of those statements I can hear exactly the kind of Supreme Court Justices the candidates will put on the bench. Don’t you see all of those important policy issues within those statements? It aggrivates me that not one of these voters had children, yet they are playing with my children’s future. These are not 18 year olds by the way, some were as old as 25 and they acted as if they could care less about the process, they just wanted to vote for who was cool. I would give the same criticisms to anyone voting for John McCain for some of the same foolish reasons, so far I have not heard statements as ridiculous, maybe its because he is not attracting a lot of younger voters who think in these terms?

“Sean Hannity did a “Man on the Street” Session not too long ago. Now regardless of your thoughts on Hannity, there is one thing for certain, he asks fair questions to perfect strangers about who they are voting for and why they are voting for that candidate during the “man on the street sessions.” One young lady said she was voting for Barak Obama, when she was asked what she knew about him, she knew nothing. When asked what she personally believed in and thought were important policies for our country, she named 1. Lower taxes 2. Victory in Iraq 3. Non-Government controlled Health Care and 4. Smaller government not larger government. Every issue she named was a policy issue for John McCain, yet because her parents were voting for Obama, she thought he held her values. She was 24. She admitted upon getting off the phone she needed to do more homework.”

Hey Young Voter, whether you are a liberal, a centrist, a conservative, or a libertarian…would you do your homework, identify the values you stand for, examine the policies of the candidates and then vote informed? My children and thousands of children around this country are going to live out your votes…essentially your children will too.

Influences (Part 2)

I’ve always told people that I feel God expects a lot out of me because I feel I have had so much invested in me. The Bible says, “To whom much is given, much is required.” I listed 7 leaders who have had influence in my life, either personally or from a distance in my Influences (Part 1) post HERE. Yet, I feel like the people I listed there and the people I will list here have been used by God to get me where I am today, but yet there are still other leaders waiting in the wings to help me get to the next level of my potential. Erwin McManus said this in Chasing Daylight, “No one moves from potential to maximum capacity without help from others. Often lost potential is the result of lack of investment.” – I never had anyone personally disciple me or take me aside and teach me leadership principles or principles for life in general other than my parents, I learned mostly by watching and observing others in action, and listening to others’ conversations and reading.

So with that, here are some of the final influences in my life, this is not by far all of them, but some key ones:

8. Rick Warren – Purpose Driven is not the only way to do ministry. In fact some churches have found that other paradigms work best for their church, however Rick Warren was key to opening my eyes to a whole new way of looking at life and ministry, simplified but effective. Who can argue with the 5 Biblical Purposes for our lives and a strong balanced focus for our ministries based on Evangelism, Discipleship, Service, Fellowship, and Worship? Rick Warren was one of the first people to help influence me in a direction away from legalism and religion.

9. Andy Stanley & Louie Giglio: When I think of Andy Stanley and Louie Giglio for some reason I think about them together. It was the Thirsty Conference in 2005 and the 2006 Catalyst Conference that I was dealing with some pretty heavy stuff in ministry. I was devistated, wounded, and ready to throw in the towel. However, at both conferences, God gave Andy and Louie the message that I needed on both occassions. I am sorry if you were one of the thousands of people there, but you were just along for the ride. 2 different conferences, 2 different years, 2 different speakers and a perfect message for some areas I was dealing with. Some of the key things I have learned from Andy is the following: #1 Leadership is a sterwardship, its on loan from God and He will hold us accountable. #2 God is soverign over the kingdoms of men and he gives them to whoever He chooses, even the lowliest of men. (I didn’t even have to look it up, its seared into my brain) and #3 The biggest temptation leaders have is to presume on God. Some of the key things I have learned from Louie is so much I cannot list them all, but a few are #1 How to love Jesus more and be who he has called us to be #2 How to pray like I am praying to a Big God and #3 The power of the cross.

10. Erwin McManus – I have never been so challenged in my life. I love his books, his podcasts, and every message I have heard from him. No matter how much I listen to Erwin, I walk away challenged and educated. I love Mosaic, I had an opportunity to visit there two years ago & it is amazing what God is doing there.

11. Larry Brown – My wife’s first pastor from birth until we got married and my pastor for several years. I never agreed with everyone he had in leadership positions at the church he pastored and the Christian school they ran, but he was a very godly man who loved Jesus and loved others, a man of integrity, a strong leader, and a great friend to my parents and my inlaws. Most of all he is a great pastor to his people and a friend to other pastors. He had a lot of influence in my life as a young person.

12. Charlie – Charlie is a friend who happens to be a superstar. Charlie is a morning show host for a Country radio station (WCOS 97.5) in Columbia, SC and last years Acadamy of Country Music Award Recipient for the Broadcast Personality of the Year for the Medium Market. I could careless about those stats though. Charlie has been an inspiration to me, I have seen him stand firm for what is right, when all others abandoned him and made him stand alone. I have seen him on the other side of the mic and see the huge heart that he and his wife have for our family and for other people in general. Charlie and his wife and their daughter Katy have been great friends to our family. Charlie is an outstanding teacher of the Bible and has greatly influenced my life through his teaching. Beyond being a great friend Charlie has been a mentor to me as a young man.

13. Dolphus Bell – Has some of the greatest integrity I have ever seen in a man. I served on a church leadership team with Dolphus and he is full of wisdom and has been a great spiritual mentor to me. I have learned so much from Dolphus I could not begin to share it all. I have seen Dolphus sit silent in some controversial meetings holding his peace, but when he spoke up at the very end, it was as if his words were straight from God. When I think of Dolphus I think of two things: #1 Wisdom and #2 He can get a hold of God; if you had a special prayer need, Dolphus is the type person you would usually want to go to first.

14. Bob Wilson – Bob and I have a special relationship. He is a great friend but also a great spiritual mentor. Bob and I have spent hours upon hours talking Jesus and ministry. Bob was our Small Groups Pastor at a former church and I was his understudy. He enabled me to learn small groups and to implement them in the ministries that I oversaw. He taught me a lot.

I believe one of the greatest things these people have taught me is character. None of them are perfect and some of the people mentioned here I have never met, but God has still used them in my life. Abraham Lincoln said, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” I believe these men have used their power for good in my life and I am eternally thankful for it!

Conversations with a 5 Year Old

…about the rusty water from the toilet pipe. Straight from a 5 year old’s mind and heart to his lips. Just keeping it real, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Sometimes you get the sweet like HERE and then you get the…

Gavin: “Daddy!!”

Me: “What Gavin?”

Gavin: “There’s brown water behind the toilet!”

Me: “I know, I’ve got to clean it up and see where it is coming from, I think a pipe is rusted or something.”

Gavin: “Well I think I may know what it is!”

Me: “What do you think it is?”

Gavin: “Well, sometimes, the poopy logs are bigger than the pipe hole, so that could be what is causing it to leak out the brown water!”

Me: (Trying my best to hold back laughter) “Oh! Did you tell your mom your idea about what could be causing the brown water on the floor?” “Give me five for being so smart and go tell her!”

This is the first time I have ever posted “Conversations with a 5 Year Old” so close together, but when Gavin and I had this conversation I could not resist in sharing.

This is me in 16 30 years when Hailey wants to date, except I will probably be holding a gun. Oh, the joys of having a daughter!

Conversations with a 5 Year Old

…about new sister and Jesus.

Gavin was in the bathtub at MeMaw’s house yesterday and here was their conversation (some of which is not exact word for word being that it was told to me, but was totally unaided and unprovoked…straight from a 5 year old’s brain & heart to his lips):

Gavin: “We need to go get Hailey a balloon and a blue balloon from the store.”

MeMaw: “Ok, we can go get Hailey a balloon, but why a blue one?”

Gavin: “The blue one is not for Hailey, its a thank you balloon for Jesus.” – “We can send it up to him to tell him thank you for giving us Hailey!”

I am so thankful that I have a 5 year old son who already has a heart to please Jesus. I was speachless when I heard the story, and as MeMaw told the balloon lady, she began to cry. Needless to say, I was blessed with a brand new Beautiful daughter this week, but I have already been blessed with two awesome sons, for which I cannot thank God enough for. We always hear how God will ‘open the windows of Heaven and pour us out a blessing’ and so many times people automatically think of financial blessings, but I know that it does not always come in the form of finances (that would make things a lot easier) but it comes at times like these conversations, becasue I would take a son with a heart for Jesus over all the riches in the world.

If the video comes out ok I will post it so you can see Gavin pray before he sends Jesus his ballloon.

Blessed,

Nick

Round 3: Hailey Elizabeth Carnes (Flickr)

Here are some pictures from my sisters camera. It shows a pretty good picture of the hospital party that took place after Hailey’s birth. If you are familiar with gypsies, then you will know when one of them have a baby, the whole village floods the hospital…I don’t think we are any better. It feels good to be loved though :)

For some reason I cannot embed the slidshow into my blog.

Round 2: Hailey Elizabeth Carnes

Well, I have been humbled! I give Hailey one post on my blog and she steals the show. I had my biggest blog day yesterday, ever, thanks to Miss Hailey and over half of the hits were direct (unique) hits to her post. A few hours old and she’s already a Blogstar – Maybe if Nicki will have a few more babies I can get some regular readers :) – Sorry that’s going to take a miracle! (The babies and the regular readers)

Here are some additional pictures of Hailey. We have taken more than 14 pictures of course, but do to space and time to upload them, this is all I am posting at one time until we can set up a slide show or something. (Click on the Thumbnail to Enlarge)

I know, I know, you saw the picture of me in the doctor outfit and thought, “George Clooney Who?” Its ok, I thought the same thing :) – By the way for those who may have missed my update yesterday, Hailey was born at 12:45 pm on Tuesday and weighed 7.0 pounds and was 20 inches tall.

We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers and all of the congratulations. I cannot tell you all individually, but I hope you know it is greatly appreciated!

Hailey Elizabeth Carnes

Here are a few pictures of Haileys first minutes into her new world.
Updated: She was born at 12:45 pm, weighing 7 pounds even and 20 inches in length. Other than being tired, Nicki is doing great…glad its over with!

Thank you all for your congratulations and your prayers! They are all greatly appreciated :)
(Click on the Thumbnail to enlarge)

It may not be evident in the photos, but Hailey’s got some pretty plump lips…she is going to make some guy’s cry…ha ha! I told my wife they better turn out to be like Angelina Jolie lips versus Bubba Gump lips.

I’ve already shot one doctor for looking at her wrong while she was naked, the cops are looking for me, so I have to hang low for a while, pervert :)

I apologize in advance if I do not respond to your emails, comments, and tweets quickly. There is no WiFi at the hospital and I have to run to Panera to have internet access.

Hailey arrives today

Well, today is the day that we have been waiting on for the last 8 months (since we found out Nicki was pregnant); and the day we’ve been waiting on for almost 6 years. Our first two children were boys, Gavin and Tristan, who we love dearly, but Nicki has been wanting a little girl for just as long…so today is the day!

The hospital we will be at does not have WiFi as far as I know, so as soon as mom and baby are ok and taking their post-surgery naps I will run down the street to Panera to upload some pictures. Sorry folks, I’m poor and do not have one of those fancy iPhones that enable me to streamline my life :) – So thank you all in advance for your prayers, thoughts, and support – Pictures coming soon!

The Final Countdown

The Final Countdown has started. In approximately 24 hours
Hailey Elizabeth Carnes will arrive!

Nicki is scheduled to be at the hospital at 10:00 am tomorrow and the surgery is scheduled at 12:30 pm, so Hailey should be here around 1:00 pm (weird time for a c-section). We would appreciate your prayers for a safe delivery and for a healthy baby and mom. (Of course you can add that she is beautiful as well…and smart…and whole (meaning she has all of her normal body parts and functions) if you want) :)

Nicki and I are going to celebrate one last evening without a crying, poopy baby with dinner and most likely Batman the Dark Knight (if we can get a ticket) since the boys will be with their MeMaw.
