Being True to Yourself

I am reading over the Purpose Driven Church book and came across one of the myths that Rick Warren tackles in Part One of the book (Seeing the Big Picture).
Rick Warren talks about the things that other churches cannot copy, here is the third thing Rick says you cannot copy, this spoke to me:

Third, you can’t be me. (No one in his right mind would want my weaknesses.) Only I can be me, and only you can be you. That’s the way God intended it. When you get to heaven, God is not going to say, “Why weren’t you more like Rick Warren (or Jerry Falwell or Bill Hybels or John MacArthur or anyone else)?” God is likely to say, “Why weren’t you more like you?”
God made you to be yourself. He wants to use your gifts, your passion, your natural abilities, your personality, and your experiences to impact your part of the world. All of us start out as originals. Unfortunately, many end up as carbon copies of someone else. You cannot grow a church trying to be someone else.

This spoke to me, because it is kind of my ministry in a nutshell. I have had the privilege of serving in various forms of ministry since I was 10 years old…however for 14 to 15 years after that I was influenced that my serving, my speaking/preaching, my methods and style had to mimic those who were in leadership over me. I was miserable until God showed me that being myself was more powerful that copying anyone. There is a Bible college and a couple of churches in our area that are full of young guys with an ambition and call to ministry, but many of them never get off the ground because they are too busy copying their hero and trying to be like him. I wonder what kind of impact those churches and that school would have in this country if those men decided to be themselves? Be yourself!

Verse

Here is a great verse that spoke to me today:
“If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done.
Ecclesiastes 11:4 (LB)

Random Thoughts: The Religion of Evolution

Have you ever witnessed a monkey turn into a human? Have you ever witnessed an Ape having a human baby? What then make Evolution different than Creation? You either have faith that you evolved from an animal or you have faith that you were created by an all loving, powerful, creator. Either way, you operate using blind faith. Evolution has been dis-proven more times than Glynn Wolfe was married, yet people still follow it.

People will not embrace Christianity because they did not see God create them, yet they will embrace evolution even though they did not see themselves evolve from an animal. In fact have we discovered anything that has evolved into a new and totally different species? Evolution is merely another religion supported and created by scientist.

PDYM 2.0

The PDYM Community Website is now blog based. The staff at PDYM has given those of us who are state mentors the face of the franchise…Literally! We have all been made contributors to the blog, and the articles have increased tremendously! I love it. There is some really good stuff out there. Go check it out! I’ve got a few things out there…just search for Nick Carnes on the blog and you’ll find me. The old site is still up, but I believe they are moving towards fazing it out.

Community Group Fun

Last night our church had Group Link to help get new people plugged into a Community Group.
Up to this point there has only been 3 groups available, but last night that increased to 11. I took a picture of some of the things my group was offering to get people to sign up and join our group.
“50% off Registration”
“$100,000 in Monopoly Money since they use a credit card now”
“Bingo Night every 3rd Sunday”
“The Carnes Group, where God is and where you should be!”
“Free Collectible Jesus Action Figure and Bobble Heads”
“Smiling Faces and lessons on picking your friends nose”

It was tons of fun!!!
