Dear Lego

Don’t ever tell an 8 year old that he will receive his free Lego magazine in the mail between 6 & 8 weeks and still not have it to him in 9! Now, stop reading this post and get those magazines in the mail! :)

Conversations with a Seven Year Old: The Degree

Gavin

Interesting conversations Nicki and I have with our children…

This is a conversation Nicki had with Gavin this morning about earning money.

Nicki: “If you want to make good money when you grow up you’ll have to go to college and get a degree.”

Gavin: “How can I get my degree now so I can make a better allowance?”

Smart kid.

Kids and Cameras: Meet Gavin

Nicki found these video clips from Gavin the other day on her digital camera. I combined the two for Gavin’s first episode of G TV. Apparently, when we are not around he feels liberated to video whatever is on his mind. This may be fun in years to come?! :-)

Gavin the Actor

dscf1198

Last night was Gavin’s first school play. He was selected to do a speaking part as a pig. Of course I am biased, but I think he did the best on his part. It was just two lines, but he spoke loud enough where everyone could hear him in the microphone and clearly. One boy played a Chicken, his jobs was to walk around the stage until it came to his part. He was hilarious! He had the crowd laughing. I attempted to get everything on video, but my memory card messed up, so I’ve posted some pictures instead. The top picture shows Gavin being the Kindergartener that he is…He’s the one acting as if he is being choked (Click on the image a couple times to enlarge it). Yeah, he got his teacher’s attention with that one.

Happy Birthday Gavin!!!

gavin-incredible

My little “oldest” son Gavin turns 6 years old today! I must say that I am extremely thankful to God for giving Gavin 6 healthy years of life, for protecting him in ways we’ve known (through a horrible car accident 3 years ago) and in ways that we will never know. I am thankful that the Lord has given Gavin abilities that some children do not have as well as gifts and passions such as art, soccer, and doing anything creative that comes to his mind.

I love my boy. I love how he thinks he is strong enough to beat me up, how he helps his younger brother Tristan, how he hugs me in the morning, before he goes to school, before he goes to bed, and just because. I love that his way of showing me love sometimes is a drawing or doing something out of his passions and gifts. I love to watch him get excited about something and watch his words get scrambled trying to explain what he’s excited about. I love his faith and purity in believing that Iron Man would answer his invite to his birthday party. I love to hear him pray at meals and before bed, especially when he prays for the “sick, the hungry, and the poor” – I think you could understand that I could go on and on all day about all the ways I love Gavin, so I’ll stop here, however…

I have to admit that as I think about Gavin turning 6, it is a little saddening to me as well. I use to hate hearing adults say, “It seems like it was yesterday…” But, the fact is, that is reality, especially once you become a parent. Time flies by, years literally seem like days, and as I reflect back on 6 years with Gavin, I realize that the next 6 years will be here in what seems like a few days. If I had my way, I would not let him grow up anymore. Even though children are challenging to raise, I don’t want to lose what I have with my son where he is now. I will no longer have a 5 year old Gavin, and reality stinks sometimes!

So while I am joyful for the life my child has been blessed with and who he is as a person…I am a little disappointed that I no longer have him at 5. Happy Birthday Gavin!!!

Family Pictures 2008

These are our first professional family pictures…ever! I think its the perfect timing now that we are complete with the 5 of us! The truth is, I refused to have my picture taken because I was self concious when I was 40 pounds over weight. If you saw most of our personal pictures, you would know why, but I also look angry in them because Nicki would catch me off guard and I would not be smiling. Click on the thumbnails below to see the full size picture, then click on that picture to see the whole thing (its complicated :) ). We took several poses, but these are the one’s we puchased.

Conversations With a 5 Year Old

This is a special “Conversation With a 5 year Old” post. These are conversations straight from a 5 year olds heart and brain to his lips. Many times Gavin surprises us with his wisdom and knowledge and other times he melts our hearts with his his child-like innocence and purity, and then there are the embarassing times :)
Today I have two conversations to post about:

Conversation #1 Gavin on New Baby Sister…(Nicki is changing Hailey’s diaper)

Gavin: “Mommy!”
Nicki: “What?”

Gavin: “Hailey pee pees just normal…she doesn’t have a wee wee that sticks out when she pees.”
Nicki: “Oh!”

That would be the overly observant Gavin!

Conversation #2 Gavin on his favorite and least favorite parts of the Hulk

Me: “So Gavin what was your favorite part of the movie (the Hulk)?
Gavin: “When the bad hulk came out!”

Me: “What was part of the movie did you NOT like?”
Gavin (Less Enthusiastically): “Well, um, I think the part I didn’t like was when that man and that lady started kissing!”

At least I know I don’t have to worry about any girlfriend talk as Gavin starts Kindergarten this year! He’ll be too busy acting like the Hulk beating up the bad Hulk and that is not a bad thing! :)

Conversations with a 5 Year Old

…about the rusty water from the toilet pipe. Straight from a 5 year old’s mind and heart to his lips. Just keeping it real, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Sometimes you get the sweet like HERE and then you get the…

Gavin: “Daddy!!”

Me: “What Gavin?”

Gavin: “There’s brown water behind the toilet!”

Me: “I know, I’ve got to clean it up and see where it is coming from, I think a pipe is rusted or something.”

Gavin: “Well I think I may know what it is!”

Me: “What do you think it is?”

Gavin: “Well, sometimes, the poopy logs are bigger than the pipe hole, so that could be what is causing it to leak out the brown water!”

Me: (Trying my best to hold back laughter) “Oh! Did you tell your mom your idea about what could be causing the brown water on the floor?” “Give me five for being so smart and go tell her!”

This is the first time I have ever posted “Conversations with a 5 Year Old” so close together, but when Gavin and I had this conversation I could not resist in sharing.

Conversations with a 5 Year Old

…about new sister and Jesus.

Gavin was in the bathtub at MeMaw’s house yesterday and here was their conversation (some of which is not exact word for word being that it was told to me, but was totally unaided and unprovoked…straight from a 5 year old’s brain & heart to his lips):

Gavin: “We need to go get Hailey a balloon and a blue balloon from the store.”

MeMaw: “Ok, we can go get Hailey a balloon, but why a blue one?”

Gavin: “The blue one is not for Hailey, its a thank you balloon for Jesus.” – “We can send it up to him to tell him thank you for giving us Hailey!”

I am so thankful that I have a 5 year old son who already has a heart to please Jesus. I was speachless when I heard the story, and as MeMaw told the balloon lady, she began to cry. Needless to say, I was blessed with a brand new Beautiful daughter this week, but I have already been blessed with two awesome sons, for which I cannot thank God enough for. We always hear how God will ‘open the windows of Heaven and pour us out a blessing’ and so many times people automatically think of financial blessings, but I know that it does not always come in the form of finances (that would make things a lot easier) but it comes at times like these conversations, becasue I would take a son with a heart for Jesus over all the riches in the world.

If the video comes out ok I will post it so you can see Gavin pray before he sends Jesus his ballloon.

Blessed,

Nick
